Multiple Offenders: The Division of Motor Vehicles uses the interlock in the hearing process for conditional restoration. At the end of any revocation for DWI, DMV requires the person who has a BAC of 0.16 or more; or who had a prior conviction of DWI; or a related offense within 7 years; to drive only vehicles with an operable ignition interlock and to personally activate the interlock device before driving.

Verification of Proof: DMV requires multiple offenders to have vendor's verification of install prior to restoration. Officers should be alert for a *9 on driver's license and then ask for the conditional restoration agreement.

Length of Requirement: First offenders terms vary from 2 to 7 years, depending on the number of convictions in a 10 year period and whether the last charge occurred before or after July 1, 2000.

Installation of the Interlock: If the ignition interlock is a part of the DWI offender's requirements to drive, the person may call Monitech, Inc. at 1-800-521-4246 to schedule an appointment for installation. Just a friendly reminder though, in many cases, installation verification is required before a privilege is granted.

When Should a Person Call? Appointments can normally be scheduled within one to three weeks, sometimes four. The first offender, if conviction is probable, may wish to call four weeks in advance of court date. By calling early, an appointment can be more easily scheduled to coincide with conviction and help reduce or prevent interruption of the driving privilege.
